Our No Screen Summer Plan: Less Tech, More Connection

Have you ever heard of No Screen Summer? I stumbled across the idea last year and loved the concept. And before you say, “No way, we can’t do that” — hang with me for a minute.

Here’s what No Screen Summer means for our family:

  1. No iPads (which we only use for travel anyway — so not a big deal)

  2. No gaming systems

  3. No morning TV

  4. No daytime TV

That’s it. It’s not about being screen-free all the time. We still do family movie nights, and my son watches baseball or sports with his dad. And yep, there are a few exceptions for special occasions. The goal isn’t perfection — it’s presence.

I don’t panic if my kids see a screen. It’s just a structure that helps us reconnect. When we press pause on constant screen time, something beautiful happens:

  • More reading

  • More outdoor play

  • More imagination

  • More yoga (of course!)

  • More LEGOs, forts, make-believe

  • More “Come over and play!” moments

  • More time with each other

And truthfully? This isn’t just for them. It’s for me, too. I need the break.

From the scrolling. From the updates. From the tabs open in my brain.

So, I’m setting limits for myself as well: I’ll do work from my phone only while the kids are at camp or asleep. No more trying to answer emails while halfway listening to a story about lizards and sidewalk chalk.

No Screen Summer isn’t about ditching devices forever. It’s about creating space for what matters most — and noticing how good that space feels.

What do you think? Could your family try a version of No Screen Summer? Let us know — we’d love to hear how you make it your own. Email us or comment below!
